This circular is to remind you about the MARPOL Annex IV (Sewage) Amendments which are entering into force from 27th September 2008.
The following ships engaged in international voyages will be required to have on board an International Sewage Pollution Prevention Certificate from 27th September 2008:
l ships of 400 gross tonnage and above; and
l ships of less than 400 gross tonnage which are certified to carry more than 15 persons.
This will be applicable to new and existing ships. The details of the amendments to MARPOL Annex IV can be found in IMO MEPC circular No. 115(51) which is attached herewith.
In order to obtain an International Sewage Pollution Prevention Certificate, the vessel should be equipped with:
1. One of the following sewage systems:
o a sewage treatment plant which shall be of a type approved by the Administration under the terms of Resolution MEPC.2(VI) (For existing ships i.e. ships built before 27th September 2003, national specifications are acceptable) OR
o a sewage comminuting and disinfecting system approved by the Administration OR
o a holding tank of the capacity to the satisfaction of the Administration for the retention of all sewage
2. In addition to the above, vessels to have a pipeline and standard shore discharge connection to enable pipes of reception facilities to be connected with the vessel (refer Regulation 10 Annex IV of MARPOL) |
